Religion and race are at the heart of the race

The religious dimension still ranks high in the race for the White House, and Donald Trump remains a leader among white Christian voters, according to a recent Pew Research Center tally of 10,000 registered voters. The numbers show a decline in the president’s approval rating compared to last August’s polls among white Catholics, Protestants and Evangelicals. In contrast, Joe Biden is among the other religious and ethnic groups included in the census.

The Republican candidate is ahead of his rival among white Catholic voters, as 52% of them tend to choose him, compared to 59% in the previous census. This applies to non-evangelical Protestants, as their support rate decreased from 59% to 53%. But Trump still leads amidst the religious group that supports him the most, namely white evangelicals, of whom 78% tend to elect him, compared to 83% in recent months.
In contrast, Biden leads the poll among Black Protestants (90%), Jews (70%) and Latino Catholics (67%), without backing down in last summer’s polls. It has the support of 83% atheist and agnostic voters, and the support of 62% of voters who are not affiliated with any religious ideology.
White Christians are the most influential group in the vote, constituting 44% of all registered voters, compared to 7% of Black Protestants and 5% of Latino Catholics. While Biden is slightly ahead of his rival among the broader Catholic electorate, and primarily among non-religious voters, Trump remains at the top of the Protestant and Evangelical polls. Support for the incumbent president has declined among Muslim voters, who make up a small percentage of the American electorate (the number registered to vote this year is around a million).
