More than 70 archaeological and artistic works in Berlin museums were stained with an oily liquid by an unknown person on October 3, according to German authorities, who linked the incident to possible conspiracy theories.
Christina Häck, deputy director of museums in the German capital Berlin, said that 63 items from the Pergamon Museum, the Alt National Gallery and the Neues Museum have been affected.
The deputy explained that there is no unified pattern or method of targeting, tracking specific pieces, but it appears that the pieces were chosen randomly and spontaneously, according to a Forbes report.
The image showed “Forbes” smearing an Egyptian trail with the oily substance.
A Berlin criminal police officer, Carsten Pfolle, said it was unclear how the liquid was used, and it appeared that the pieces were selected at random, while investigators believe that only one person is responsible for staining the artifacts.
The director of Egyptian antiquities in Berlin, Frederick Seyfried, noted that the material with which the artifacts are stained is oily, but not corrosive, and Seyfried did not provide any other information about the material.
German police urged witnesses to report any suspicious activity on October 3, and police added that they had not made any announcements on the matter due to “tactical considerations” linked to the investigation.
