The Israeli hospital “Hadassah Ein Karem” in occupied Jerusalem announced the deterioration of the health of the secretary of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Saeb Erekat, who was recently infected with the new Corona virus.

“Mr. Erekat spent a quiet night, but this morning there has been a deterioration in his condition that is classified as critical, causing difficulty in breathing … he was resuscitated and hypnotized,” the hospital said in a statement issued Monday.

The hospital statement added: “Erekat’s treatment is a great challenge, especially since he underwent a lung transplant that affects the immune system and has a bacterial infection in addition to the Corona virus.”

On the ninth of this month, the Palestine Liberation Organization announced that Erekat was infected with the virus and was transferred on Sunday for treatment in occupied Jerusalem.

The Organization’s Negotiating Affairs Department said in a brief statement Sunday that Erekat was transferred for treatment “due to chronic health problems in his respiratory system” and “because his condition requires special medical care and supervision.”

In 2017, the 65-year-old secretary of the Organization underwent a lung transplant at a hospital in the United States, before resuming his activities.

It is noteworthy that the King of Jordan, Abdullah II, gave instructions to provide the necessary medical care to Erekat in Jordanian hospitals, should his situation require it.

Erekat serves as secretary of the Palestine Liberation Organization and is described as close to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

He participated in several negotiations aimed at solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and in recent weeks he intensified statements of opposition to the normalization of relations between Israel and the Gulf countries, in the absence of a peace agreement between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
