US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Sunday night that “Washington is ready to use its powers to impose sanctions on any individual or entity that contributes to buying and selling weapons to Iran,” noting that “the international arms embargo against Tehran remains in force. “

“Almost all UN sanctions have returned to Iran, including the re-imposition of the UN arms embargo,” Pompeo said.

He continued: “Consequently, the export of some conventional weapons to Iran is a violation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) of 1929, and the purchase of any weapons or related material from Iran is a violation of the Security Council Resolution 1747, “he said. .

“The United States is prepared to use its national authorities and impose sanctions on those who provide technical training, financial support, services and other assistance related to these weapons,” Pompeo added.

He added that “any country that seeks to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East and supports the fight against terrorism must refrain from any arms deal with Iran,” as he himself said. Noting that “supplying weapons to Iran will only exacerbate tensions in the region, place more dangerous weapons in the hands of terrorist groups and proxies, and run the risk of increasing threats to the security of Israel and other peaceful countries,” he said.

The US Secretary of State noted that “in the last ten years, countries have refrained from selling weapons to Iran under various United Nations procedures,” noting that “any country that now defies this embargo will clearly choose to feed conflict and tension over promoting peace and security “.

Pompeo said on September 20 that the UN sanctions against Iran had come into effect again, despite the organization’s rejection of this issue, threatening countries that would not implement the sanctions with “consequences.”

He stressed that “if the member states of the United Nations do not comply with their obligations to implement these sanctions, the United States is willing to use our internal powers to regulate the consequences of this non-compliance and ensure that Iran does not benefit from activities prohibited by the United Nations. “.

In response, Iran’s representative on the Security Council, Majid Takht Rawanchi, downplayed the impact of the United States’ move to reimpose sanctions on his particular country, noting that the deadline set by Washington expired without it happening. nothing.

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, had written in an Arab tweet on his Twitter account, two days ago, that “today automatically ends according to Agreement 2231, arms restrictions in my country.”

He said: “It is not strange that your country opposes indiscriminate weaponry. Weapons in Iran have always been defensive. They did not start wars and did not provoke corruption like others.”

For his part, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he could not take any action against a declaration by the United States to re-impose all UN sanctions on Iran, as there are “suspicions” in this regard. He also doubted at the same time whether the termination (of sanctions) … is still valid. “

“The secretary general cannot advance as if there were no such suspicion,” Guterres emphasized.

The European parties, signatories to the nuclear deal, said in a message to the 15-member council that “any decision or measure to re-impose UN sanctions” will have no legal effect.

Moscow, for its part, said Washington should not speak on behalf of the UN Security Council and stressed that efforts to preserve the nuclear deal continue.

On August 15, the UN Security Council rejected a draft resolution by the United States to extend the arms embargo imposed on Iran, and the United States failed in its attempt to pass the draft resolution after Russia and China seized. they opposed, and Great Britain, France, Germany and 8 other members abstained from voting.
