French President Emmanuel Macron described the stabbing of a teacher who showed his students in high school cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad as terrorism against “Islamists.”

Macron said a man killed a history teacher who was showing his high school students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in this attack on free speech.

“A citizen was killed today because he was a teacher and because he was teaching students freedom of expression,” Macron added, near the school, where the teacher was killed in a northwestern suburb of Paris. Macron described the attack as “Islamist” terrorism.

“The whole country supports the teachers,” he said. Terrorists will not divide France … obscurantism will not win.

Authorities had said a man had massacred a teacher at a preparatory school outside his school in a Paris suburb after the teacher showed his students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

Police shot the perpetrator a few streets from the scene of the accident, which occurred on Friday night in a residential suburb northwest of Paris.

A police representative said the victim of Friday’s attack died with multiple stab wounds to the neck. A police source said the teacher had been beheaded in the attack.

French broadcaster BFMTV said the attacker was 18 years old and born in Moscow.

A police source said witnesses heard the attacker chanting “God is great.” The police spokesman said that this information is being verified.

The attack took place in the street in front of the school where the dead man worked in the suburb of Conflans-Saint-Honorine, northwest of Paris.
