Security forces detained the owner of the diesel tank, a security source confirmed. It runs a private generator that provides electricity to residents during daily power outages across the country, according to the source.
For its part, the Red Cross wrote on Twitter: “The number of victims has risen to 4 and the number of injured as a result of the explosion of a diesel tank” in the area of Tariq Al-Jadida.
The National News Agency quoted the secretary general of the Red Cross, George Kittana, as saying that there were “injured people who were taken to hospitals.”
Local television “Al-Jadid”, which reported more than 20 injured, showed images of flames in one of the alleys, followed by images, during which the screams of frightened residents of the area were heard.
Firefighters evacuated residents from neighboring buildings, while gray smoke still rose, according to scenes broadcast by the channel.
Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud told Al-Jadid that the evacuations are continuing.
He added that the municipality has worked in recent weeks to inspect warehouses that may pose a threat to residential neighborhoods, noting that around a hundred sites have been identified. “We closed one part and imposed measures on the other part to guarantee public safety,” he said. “We were afraid of similar incidents,” added the governor.
For at least three decades, Lebanon has been suffering from a growing problem in the electricity sector, which has ruined factories and long hours of rationing, forcing most citizens to pay two bills, one for the state and one for the public. owners of private electricity generators that compensate for the lack of state supply.
