On Wednesday, Russian authorities announced that there were explosions and a fire at a munitions depot within a military region in the center of the country.

Russian authorities rushed to evacuate residents of more than 10 villages in the Ryazan region on Wednesday after a fire broke out at a munitions depot that caused thick smoke to spread.

And in the video clips posted on social media, ammunition explosions could be heard in the warehouse.

In one of the videos, a witness said it was raining ash and shrapnel. Reuters could not immediately verify the authenticity of the videos.

Russia’s Information Agency quoted emergency services as saying that a shell could be heard exploding every 5 to 10 seconds.

The Interfax news agency, citing the Emergency Ministry, said that a road was closed and more than 10 villages within a 5 km radius had been evacuated from the warehouse, which is 260 km southeast of Moscow.

The TASS news agency quoted the Russian military as saying that the fire broke out in the warehouse due to the winds that pushed it into a blaze that started in a nearby field. He added that no one was injured at the scene and that the forces and the civilian population were evacuated.

There have been fires and explosions in the Russian army ammunition depots for years, drawing criticism for poor security standards.
