In addition to the battles in the Nagorno Karabakh region between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the region has become a playground for a number of foreign interventions.
Ali Akbar Velayati, international affairs adviser to Iranian leader Ali Khamenei, gave a detailed explanation about his country’s position on the ongoing battles between Azerbaijan and Armenia since late last month due to a border dispute over the Nagorno Karabakh region.
Velayati said in an interview with the fundamentalist newspaper Kayhan on Tuesday that “Iran supports the political settlement between Baku and Yerevan and opposes ongoing military action.”
Khamenei’s adviser confirmed that his country has concerns due to some developments in the Nagorno Karabakh crisis, such as the interventions of Turkey and Israel.
He went on to say that the dialogue between Azerbaijan and Armenia is the only way to solve the problems of the two neighboring countries with Iran, according to him.
Velayati claimed that Armenia occupies 7 cities belonging to the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and asked Yerevan to return the areas it described as occupied to Baku again and return to the international borders.
The Iranian official indicated that about a million Azerbaijanis have fled the lands it said Armenia had occupied, and that they should return to their homeland soon, he said.
The adviser to the Iranian guide called on Turkey to end the war and described the military solution as detrimental to the interests of Baku and Yerevan and the security of the region.
Velayati noted that the security of Iran’s northern regions in the South Caucasus has been in jeopardy due to the ongoing war there, since the end of last September.
He went on to say: “Armenia is a neighbor of Iran, but we have many things in common with Azerbaijan, be it in religion, history and culture, so we are very concerned about the fate of Baku, and we believe that its occupied lands should be returned. “.
He implicitly accused Turkey of encouraging one of the parties to the conflict to go to war, rather than acting wisely on ongoing developments in the Karabakh region, and emphasized that Iran will defend its borders and security firmly, he said.
The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region began after the collapse of the Soviet Union, when more than 30,000 people were killed in violent battles between the two countries between 1991 and 1994.
