Al-Assad confirms the presence of Syrian fighters in the battles in the Nagorno-Karabakh region

Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad confirmed the presence of Syrian fighters deployed by Ankara in the battle areas in Nagorno Karabakh between Azerbaijan and Armenia. And French President Emmanuel Macron made similar remarks on Thursday. Al-Assad also accused his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, of being responsible for the recent escalation of the conflict in the region between the Azerbaijani government and separatists of Armenian origin.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in an interview published by Russia’s Information Agency on Tuesday that Syrian militants are being deployed in one area. Nagorno Karabakh, Confirming similar statements made by the French president Emmanuel macron Thursday.

“Damascus can confirm this,” Assad said. Turkey and Azerbaijan deny what France, Russia and Iran have said that Ankara is sending Syrian mercenaries to participate in the fighting that broke out in the region on September 27.

Al-Assad accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of being the main instigator of the escalation in the region.

Clashes in the region between Azerbaijan and Armenians broke out on September 27 and reached their fiercest levels since the 1990s.

The fighting increased international concern that other regional powers would be involved in the conflict, as Turkey expressed solidarity with Azerbaijan, while Armenia concluded a defense agreement with Russia.
