French authorities in the Paris region imposed a heightened state of alert with the rapid increase in Coronavirus cases, banning holiday gatherings and demanding the closure of all bars, but allowed restaurants to continue to operate.
The Paris police chief said the new restrictions will be imposed for the next two weeks at least, adding: “We continue to adapt to the reality imposed by the virus and are taking steps to curb its spread,” according to the Associated Press.
Beginning Tuesday, student celebrations and family gatherings will be prohibited in facilities open to the public.
The restaurants will remain open, but with strict restrictions, including a space of no less than one meter between each table and the other, and restricting groups to a maximum of 6 people instead of 10 as in the past.
Customers’ names and phone numbers will also need to be recorded, to help warn of those who may have been exposed to a person infected with the coronavirus.
The indoor sports facilities, including the swimming pools, will be open to children up to 18 years of age, while the gyms will now be closed.
Cinemas and museums will remain open, subject to strict health conditions, but exhibitions or professional shows will not be allowed.
Authorities continued to impose restrictions on the 1,000 daily spectators of major sporting events, and allowed the Roland Garros tennis tournament to continue as planned this week.
