On Friday, the Lebanese Interior Ministry announced the imposition of the closure of 111 villages and towns across the country for a week, following a series of record daily infection rates with the coronavirus.
The decision comes after a widespread refusal to impose a national shutdown in August, as the country faces its worst economic crisis in decades.
A ministry statement said that beginning Sunday morning and for a period of eight days, residents of the areas covered by the decision “should adhere to their homes and adopt a muzzle to cover their mouth and nose when they have to. move”.
The ministry affirmed that the works in all public and private institutions will be stopped, and all social and religious events will be canceled, while health institutions, pharmacies and ovens will be excluded. He mentioned the home delivery service app only in stores.
The Director General of Beirut Government Hospital, Firas Al-Abyad, welcomed the new approach to applying closure by region. “This will help clarify critical points and local and specific use of closure procedures,” he wrote on Twitter. The number of cases increased after a massive explosion in the port of Beirut on August 4, which killed more than 190 people and confused health services in the capital, with thousands injured, according to the French Press Agency.
The country has recorded 40,868 “Covid-19” cases since February, including 374 deaths. Authorities fear the rebound could overwhelm the country’s fragile health sector.
