Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Turkey’s goal in the Karabakh region, which is disputed between his country and Azerbaijan, has been constant for more than a century, and is to exterminate the Armenian population there.
In an interview with the French newspaper “Le Figaro”, Pashinyan warned that the current escalation in Karabakh is more dangerous than in April 2016, and it is likely that Turkey, not Azerbaijan, will be the decision maker on many important issues related to the disputed region.
The Armenian prime minister stated that Ankara wants to strengthen its role in the South Caucasus and change the situation that has existed for more than a century, with the aim of “building an empire that resembles a sultanate”, which could lead to “burning all the region”.
Pashinyan called on the world to realize what is happening in the disputed region and the seriousness of the approach taken by Turkey, warning that if this does not happen, the consequences of the conflict will extend beyond the borders of Karabakh.
The Armenian Prime Minister announced that his country has evidence that Turkey has provided direct military support to Azerbaijan in Karabakh, including supplying weapons, combat equipment and military advisers from Ankara to Baku.
Pashinyan called on the American community to realize that US-made “F-16” fighters belonging to the Turkish Air Force are participating in the air strikes over Karabakh.
Pashinyan emphasized the need for Azerbaijan and Turkey to stop hostilities, adding that the self-proclaimed Republic of Karabakh cannot disarm, because this “will lead to genocide and its inhabitants will face existential danger.”
The Armenian Prime Minister stressed that the negotiations under the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe are the only way to resolve the conflict, noting that Turkey can no longer play the role of mediator due to its “partial and hostile” approach.
