Greek-Turkish agreement on a mechanism to avoid military confrontations

On Thursday, Greece and Turkey agreed on a mechanism to prevent accidental clashes in the eastern Mediterranean, NATO announced.

This agreement is part of the efforts to appease the conflict over energy resources in the region.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the agreement between the two NATO members included the creation of a hotline to avoid accidents at sea and in the air.

He said in a statement: “I welcome the establishment of a mechanism to prevent military clashes that have been achieved through constructive contact between Greece and Turkey.”

“This security-ensuring mechanism can help enable diplomatic efforts to address the existing conflict, and we are ready to develop it further,” he added.

The mechanism for avoiding confrontation in military jargon means establishing lines of communication between competing armies in the same field.

It should be noted that the United States is applying this mechanism with Russia in Syria.

One of the reasons for the talks that took place at NATO headquarters was the occurrence of a small collision between two Turkish and Greek frigates, and the increase in military maneuvers by the navies of the two countries in the Mediterranean.

And the eastern Mediterranean region has become a subject of international concern over the possibility of a military conflict between Turkey and its opponents, following their insistence on exploring energy resources in areas in dispute with Greece and Cyprus.
