Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri announced Thursday (October 1) that Lebanon and Israel will hold United Nations-mediated talks to end a long-running border dispute between the two countries, which are still officially at war.

Berri said during a press conference that the agreement on a framework for talks with Israel to resolve the border dispute is ongoing. Her announcement comes after the United States imposed sanctions on her aide and her right-hand man for corruption and financial empowerment of Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group that Washington considers a terrorist organization.

The speaker of the Lebanese parliament added that he had asked French President Emmanuel Macron to pressure Total Energy not to delay Gas exploration in the marine area that runs along the disputed maritime border area.

Berri did not specify a date for the negotiations, but said the United States would act as a mediator during the talks scheduled to be held in the southern Lebanese border city of Naqoura.
