He added that his actions hurt the Syrian people and prolong their suffering unnecessarily, pointing out that Security Council Resolution 2254 is the only way to resolve the crisis.

The new US sanctions package is the latest in the context of a Washington-led lobbying campaign since it adopted the Caesar Act, which aims to tighten the screws on the Syrian regime and lock in its financial resources.

In August, the United States blacklisted senior Syrian government officials and commanders of various military units.

The sanctions included the regime’s media adviser Luna al-Shibl, a prominent member of the Syrian Baath Party, Muhammad Ammar Saati bin Muhammad Nawzad, six others, and the commander of the National Defense Forces, Fadi Saqr.

The National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces called on Washington to impose sanctions on Russian and Iranian figures within the framework of the “Caesar Law”.

In July, the United States included the eldest son of the Syrian President (Bashar al-Assad), Hafez, 18, on its blacklist, while this package was dubbed “the Hama and Maarat al-Numan sanctions.”

The list announced at the time, 14 new punishments, included Hafez al-Assad, Zuhair Tawfiq al-Assad and their son Karam al-Assad.

The civil war that broke out in Syria in 2011 has caused millions of Syrians to flee their country and displace millions of people within the country.
