Lebanese President Michel Aoun accepted Prime Minister-designate Mustafa Adib’s apology on Saturday for forming the government, following disagreements across the political spectrum over assuming some ministerial portfolios.
The Lebanese presidency said in a statement that President Aoun will take the necessary measures in accordance with the constitution.
Adeeb apologized for continuing with the government formation tasks, and in a speech following his meeting with Aoun at Baabda Palace, said that the consensus by which he accepted the government formation no longer exists, and that forming a government of according to the specifications that he established is doomed to failure.
For his part, former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri said today that whoever celebrates the fall of the French initiative to pressure Lebanon’s divided leaders to form a new government “will regret losing this opportunity.”
“We say to those who applaud today the fall of the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron that they will bite their fingers with regret,” Hariri added in a statement.
Lebanese political forces failed to form a new government within the deadline set by the French president due to a dispute over ministerial portfolios.
Macron visited Lebanon earlier this month for the second time since the Beirut port explosion on August 4, highlighting the need to form a government of specialists within two weeks to implement urgent reforms.
At the time, the French president warned that Lebanon was in danger of “disappearing” if it did not implement the urgent reforms required, in the midst of a suffocating economic crisis exacerbated by the explosion of the port, whose losses were estimated by international circles at no less of $ 8 billion.
Lebanese President Michel Aoun had warned that the country was heading towards “hell” if the political forces did not agree to form a government.
