The president of the Progressive Socialist Party, Walid Jumblatt, described all those who obstructed the formation of the government as “criminals”, noting that “I was the first to welcome the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron. The then former prime minister. Saad Hariri made a clear concession about the Ministry of Finance, but sadly, some link the formation of the government with the accounts related to the US presidential elections scheduled for next November.
In a press interview, Jumblatt said that the obstruction on the government horizon “comes at the expense of a dignified life for Lebanon, and also at the cost of the possibility of putting the French initiative on the right track, which could pave the way. for negotiations with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, especially the implementation of reforms, starting with the electricity sector as well as the pharmaceutical industry. The latter can be reformed and corrected if we adopt alternative (generic) medicines, instead of being handed over to posters of pharmaceutical manufacturers that benefit from the support given to this sector ”.
Noting that the delay in the formation of the government is the result of external calculations, Jumblatt expressed his dissatisfaction that this is happening “at a time when the economic and social situation in Lebanon no longer tolerates such maneuvers.”
Jumblatt stressed that he “supports that sovereign portfolios are open to all sects,” noting that “he is not afraid that the Sunni-Shiite confrontation, especially over the Finance Ministry, will hide a change in the system.”
He added: “This dispute may lead to nothing in this regard. But in the absence of a clear vision of a civil state, and at a time when the popular protest movement suddenly disappeared, anything is possible in Lebanon.”
He noted that “the issue of Hezbollah weapons cannot be resolved overnight, and this requires favorable international conditions. Iran has to agree”, but “this is not the case now.”
