Hadeel Farfour-
Until last night, “negotiations” between the owners of poultry farms and the ministries of economy and agriculture indicated a serious tendency to reconsider the price of the egg carton, which was set last week at 12,500 pounds and raise it to 15,000. pounds, after the eggs were cut from the market, due to the farmers’ refusal to deliver to the merchants according to the price that was set on the one hand, and the merchants on the other hand were reluctant to sell pending the increase in price.
Around a thousand farm owners saw pricing as a detriment to their right, as most of them were unable to obtain the feed and vaccines endorsed by the Banque du Liban, and did not take into account the new costs associated with the stages. of egg production. The approved support mechanism pivoted on the interest of large traders who import feed and vaccines, who have the ability to open bank accounts, as well as some large and large farms, while small farmers were unable to obtain the necessary quantities of vaccines, feed and other supplies necessary for production. This explains, for example, that the Hawa Chicken Foundation, excluding other farms and institutions, continues to distribute eggs to supermarkets, “because it receives subsidized feed and vaccine, and that is why the price of 12,500 pounds is convenient for it,” according to sources from the Ministry of Economy.
“With the exception of our company, all farms have been reluctant to deliver their products,” says Antonio Al Hawa, director of sales. We have been and continue to deliver a thousand cases of eggs per day, but we cannot force the chicken to intensify its daily production because there is a shortage in the market! “
The head of the Lebanese Poultry Union, Moussa Freija, explained to Al-Akhbar that “the interference of the Ministry of Economy in setting the price of eggs in this way is not correct”, since “the price of eggs differs, for example , of the price setting mechanism for sugar, rice and other food products, because it requires taking into account the costs incurred. Farmer, which varies daily based on the current state of the dollar.
He stressed that the determination of the price setting and the support mechanisms announced by him “has worked in the interest of large traders, not farmers”, indicating that the market is capable of revaluation after resuming production, which has been subject to various problems months ago.
Egg prices had started to rise since last August as a result of the drop in production due to the imported feed crisis. It should be noted that the price of 12,500 pounds was determined by a joint decision of the Ministries of Agriculture and Economy, which calculated the cost based on the prices of subsidized feed and supplies, to the cry of farmers who decided to refrain from delivering their product, while traders hid their stocks until the price rose, causing a crisis. Egg shortage.
