The execution of the 27-year-old Iranian fighter Nawid Afkari, following his conviction for the premeditated murder of a security member during popular protests in the summer of 2018, sparked a wave of global outrage.

Pompeo last month sought to reimpose all UN sanctions on Iran by filing a complaint with the UN Security Council, accusing Tehran of violating the 2015 nuclear deal.
