Foreign Policy magazine said Italy has so far obstructed the decision to impose sanctions on Turkey, due to its actions in the eastern Mediterranean.
According to the map of geopolitical interests reviewed by the magazine’s report, Italy is the European country whose vote on the imposition of sanctions would tip that balance.
According to the report, Italy may determine its interests, depending on the extent to which it benefits from energy sources in the eastern Mediterranean, after losing the energy alternatives it was acquiring in Libya.
It should be noted that the European Council needs the approval of all members of the European Union in order to impose sanctions on Turkey.
France is one of the largest countries to support the imposition of sanctions on Turkey, as French President Emmanuel Macron said his country is no longer a partner in the eastern Mediterranean due to Turkish ambitions, and called for all countries to speak out loud against Ankara.
It is also historically known that Italy has close economic interests and political relations with Turkey, and was one of the most prominent supporters of Turkey’s entry into the European Union, but the repositioning of Rome will contribute to change the Turkish position on the matter, especially because he decided to align himself with France.
