Hariri: Once again, I make the decision to take poison.

Prime Minister Saad Hariri issued the following statement:

After the disaster that affected our capital, Beirut, and all of Lebanon, as a result of the port explosion, and in the midst of the collapse that our country was going through, the Lebanese fell into a state of despair and lost with their feeling of absence from the government and the failure of state institutions and placing Lebanon in almost complete isolation from the Arab and international community.

French President Emmanuel Macron opened a hole in the impasse, for which he made two consecutive visits to Lebanon, and put in front of all the political forces one and last initiative to extend a friendly hand to stop the collapse and rebuild Beirut , holding everyone responsible for participating in saving our country from the tragedy that befell it and the citizens of all sects and regions. .

Due to the demands of many political and parliamentary forces for him to nominate a president to form the new government, I agreed with previous heads of government on behalf of Dr. Mustafa Adib, who won a large majority of deputies to form a government Importantly, it clearly defined its criteria and draft declaration for urgent economic, financial and administrative reforms. In a meeting with the owner of the only and latest initiative to curb Lebanon’s collapse, French President Emmanuel Macron, earlier this month at the Pine Palace.

These criteria were agreed by all. It is very clear that it is a small government team composed of specialists recognized for their competence and integrity, none of them belong to any political party, and that the only task of the government is the purely economic, financial and administrative reform, for months that allow the collapse of the collapse.

Indeed, President-designate Dr. Mustafa Adib began his work to form the agreed government, and clearly informed all political blocs that he is working on selecting his government team from a basket of names that meet the competency specifications. , integrity and lack of partisan affiliation, that is, the specifications that the Lebanese demanded during the popular movements, and which it welcomes. With any nomination proposals that meet the same specifications to be added to its basket, provided that the selection of names to be included in the formation presented to the President of the Republic is limited to him, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and as assumes the task entrusted to him, with the agreement of all at the beginning of the month, in the presence of President Macron.

The president-designate has already traveled a basic path to arrive at a miniature and integrated government formula that adheres to the agreed criteria, until a surprising obstacle emerged, represented by the Amal Movement and the demand of Hezbollah to appoint the Shiite ministers. and restrict the finance portfolio to what they called from the Shiite community, based on the claim that this request is a right. It is constitutional arising from the Taif Agreement, while it is a heresy that does not exist in either the constitution or Taif.

After more than two weeks have passed, it has become clear that hindering the formation of the government threatens to eliminate the opportunity to achieve the reforms demanded by all Lebanese, a condition for opening the way for President Macron’s call for an international conference to support to Lebanon at the end of next month, and therefore to the entire French initiative.

And facing the danger that Lebanon will lose its last brakes due to its collapse, with what this means of the outbreak of political, economic, life and security chaos with the crazy rise in the dollar exchange rate, and with it inflation , the prices of bread and fuel, and the beginning of the loss of medicines from the markets, in conjunction with a dangerous development in the number of injured in the Corona pandemic. I decided to help President Adeeb find a way out by appointing an independent finance minister from the Shiite community, whom he chooses, like all other ministers on the basis of competence, integrity and lack of partisan affiliation, without this decision implying any by no means the recognition of the exclusivity of the finance ministry in the Shiite sect or any sect of sects.

It should be clear that this decision is unique and does not constitute a norm on which to build future governments. Rather, it is conditional on facilitating the formation of President Adib’s government, according to agreed criteria, and facilitating its reform work, in order to stop the collapse of Lebanon and then save it and save the Lebanese.

Lebanon’s survival, livelihood, and dignity of the Lebanese people remain greater than political and sectarian conflicts, and deserve to neutralize the opportunity to save Lebanon from differences, no matter how great. With this step, the onus falls on the opponents to form the government. If they respond and facilitate our victory in Lebanon and the Lebanese win, and if they continue to obstruct them, they take responsibility for losing Lebanon’s opportunity to stop the collapse and save the Lebanese from their current and growing miseries, God forbid.

Once again I made the decision to drink poison, a decision I made only regardless of the position of previous heads of government, knowing in advance that this decision could be qualified by some as political suicide, but I made it for the good of the Lebanese, and I trust that it represents an irreplaceable decision to try to save another. An opportunity to stop the terrible collapse and prevent Lebanon from falling into the unknown.
