Lebanese President Michel Aoun warned Monday that the country is heading towards “hell” in case the political forces do not agree to form a government that was expected to be announced a week ago, and there are no solutions on the horizon to dissipate obstacles to its birth.
The political forces pledged – as French President Emmanuel Macron announced at the end of his visit to Beirut earlier this month – to form a “government with a specific mission” made up of “an independent group” and supported by all political parties within a maximum period of two weeks.
However, training efforts have fluctuated with the insistence of Hezbollah and its ally Amal Movement, led by Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, to appoint their ministers and adhere to the finance portfolio, which is opposed by other parties, in particular Saad Hariri, the leader of the Future Movement.
The Lebanese president stated that “the Shiite duo insist on joining the Ministry of Finance and appointing the minister and all the ministers of the honorable Shiite community.”
“On the other hand, the president-designate (Mustafa Adeeb) does not want to take into account the opinion of the heads of the blocs in the distribution of portfolios and the appointment of ministers, and proposes a comprehensive rotation, and the former prime ministers meet with him in this position. “
Stop the economic collapse
During a press conference, Aoun, who is one of Hezbollah’s most prominent political allies, said: “Today we are faced with the crisis of forming a government that was not supposed to happen, because the quotas awaiting Lebanon will not they allow no minute to be wasted. “
And the President of the Republic, who was tired and stuttering on several occasions, added: “With the hardening of positions, a solution is not on the horizon soon, because all the solutions that are offered are many times and are defeated “.
In response to a question about what will happen in case of incompatibility, Aoun replied, “Of course to hell.”
Since he was appointed to form a government at the end of last month, on the eve of Macron’s visit to Lebanon, Mustafa Adib visited the President of the Republic 4 times without presenting any government formation.
Adeeb aspires to form a government of specialists aimed at halting the accelerating economic collapse that Lebanon has been witnessing for a year.
He said in a statement Monday morning: “The pain of the Lebanese requires the cooperation of all parties to facilitate the formation of a major government with a specific program that the parties have previously agreed to support.”
He called on the parties to “work for the success of the French initiative immediately and without delay”, stressing that he will continue to work for the formation of the government, after media reports spoke of the possibility that he will abandon this difficult task.
