New Zealand is one step closer to eliminating the virus causing the Covid-19 epidemic again, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern decided to ease restrictions related to the emerging coronavirus in most regions to the lowest levels. Warning lows, on Monday, saying the country is moving toward elimination of Covid-19.
Ardern announced that New Zealand would reduce its virus alert level to Category 1 on a scale of four, with the exception of Auckland, where infections were recently reported.
“Our collective actions brought the virus under control,” he said. His government has earned worldwide recognition for its handling of the coronavirus crisis.
This decision means that matches like the upcoming rugby match in Wellington on October 11 will take place without restrictions.
New Zealand recorded 25 deaths from the epidemic out of a population of five million, while no new cases were recorded on Monday.
The country was believed to have come close to eliminating the virus at some point after a hundred days had passed without an infection, following the imposition of a strict nationwide lockdown between late March and late May.
Ardern said that eliminating the virus remains New Zealand’s goal. He added: “The analysis that has been completed for the Ministry of Health indicates that by the end of this month there will be an equal probability of 50-50 to eliminate Covid-19 again.”
But he explained that Oakland “needs more time” to eliminate the outbreaks of injuries detected last month in the city of 1.5 million people.
She said: “That was the epicenter of the epidemic and so we have to be careful there.”
The source of the Oakland outbreak is still unknown, but health officials say it is not from the same strain of virus that was detected earlier this year.
However, Ardern confirmed that thorough examinations and contact tracing of patients helped to keep this approach in check.
