Amal Khalil wrote in the newspaper “Al-Akhbar”:
After calls spread among members of the Beirut Fire Brigade to hold a sit-in in front of the Beirut Municipality building on Thursday afternoon, along with a meeting of their municipal council, Mayor Jamal Itani and several members preferred cancel the meeting in anticipation of a confrontation with the members of the regiment and your solidarity with them. The sit-in, the first of its kind, following the Beirut port explosion on August 4 and the martyrdom of ten members of the regiment, came after the municipality to which the regiment was affiliated paralyzed the implementation of the demands of the elements of granting economic and social aid to the families of the martyrs and spending the rest of their burial expenses and granting to all those who completed 25 years of service, 85 in 100 percent of their salary as compensation for end of service, promotion of noncommissioned officers and sergeants who were not included in the partial promotion in 2018.
As an alternative to the municipality meeting, Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud arranged a meeting in his office between a delegation from the regiment and Itani, and municipality members Rami El Ghawi and Tony Syriani. On their promise, those gathered went to the regiment’s headquarters in Karantina to inform officials of the municipality’s readiness to support their demands in the next session, which will likely take place next Monday. Itani’s new promise, however, was not believed by a series of elements that attacked the municipality and its politics.
