“Student dollar” to a subcommittee “graveyard”!

The work of the student dollar is not done yet. Yesterday, the mixed parliamentary committees referred to a subcommittee the proposal to “oblige the Bank of Lebanon to pay an amount of ten thousand dollars according to the official exchange rate of the dollar (1515 pounds)” for the academic year 2020-2021 for Lebanese students who are studying abroad. The subcommittee includes representatives: Bahia Hariri, Ihab Hamadeh, Edgar Trabelsi, and Bilal Abdullah.

The commission, scheduled to meet next Monday, will reformulate the bill in terms of excluding those with dollar accounts, in an attempt to reduce the financial burden, and facilitate the approval of the proposal in the General Assembly, provided this be accompanied by the release of an amount of only $ 10,000 per year for those with dollar accounts, including accounts. Frozen.
A delegation from the Association of Families of Lebanese Students Abroad discussed, in a meeting with representatives before the committee session, the number of students and the costs involved in proposing the law. Sami Hamia, a member of the association, explained: “We informed the representatives that the figure does not exceed 7,000 and the cost barely reaches 60 million dollars annually. It should be noted that the accurate census of students is the responsibility of the official authorities, who did not lift a finger despite the passage of 9 months since the beginning of the parents’ movement. At the time, Hariri suggested distributing a form on social media, but this effort was unsuccessful as only 2,000 students completed the form. The delegation gave the deputies a memorandum demanding the establishment of a transparent mechanism to implement the law, including that “the amount must be paid to the beneficiary or guardian directly into the student’s account number, or the amount can be received from the Banque du Liban or its branches in the governorates through reliable banks, and parents will avoid complications in relation to the required documents. ” And not to repeat the experience of the money changers who raised questions regarding the breach of the circulars of the Bank of Lebanon and the payment of what they owe to the students, or the payment of small sums and forcing parents to sign larger sums, what which resulted in a described robbery.

The subcommittee will reformulate the law to ease its burden

And the people had signed a petition in which they assigned the association to follow up on problems with money exchange companies through the Financial Public Ministry to collect their rights.
Coinciding with the joint parliamentary commission session, the association organized a meeting during which it confirmed that “time has shortened after the universities began their new academic year on September 1, while a large part of the students still They are in Lebanon because they cannot pay the registration and living costs, and some of them received notification. Dismissal for non-payment of the remaining fees or for non-registration.
