Qatar made an official request yesterday to host the 2027 Asian Cup soccer championship, and became the only competitor to Saudi Arabia in the race to win the tournament organization after arrival.

The head of the Qatar Olympic Committee, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, said: “Qatar submitted a request to organize the Asian Cup for the third time that it hosted the continental championship after the 1988 and 2011 versions,” and stressed that “Qatar has the plans, the will and the experience to attract and organize more international and continental championships.” .

Saudi Arabia was the only one to formally request the regulation, before Qatar entered the candidates.

Qatar has hosted the Asian Championship twice (1988 and 2011), while Saudi Arabia hopes to host the tournament for the first time.

The AFC Executive Committee is slated to decide the identity of the host winner next year, after the deadline for submitting the nomination file has been extended to June 30.

Doha and Riyadh are also vying for the right to host the 21st edition of the 2030 Asian Games, following the announcement by the Asian Olympic Council that the two capitals will be nominated in early April.
