A new study showed that the death toll from the Corona pandemic in Syria is very large compared to official figures released by regime authorities in Damascus.

And CBS News cited a study published Tuesday that, as of September 2, there had been about 4,380 deaths from the Corona virus in Damascus, which had not been officially recorded.

The study indicated that the follow-up of these cases in Damascus was due to the presence of follow-up mechanisms, which means that deaths outside the capital can be much higher because it is not possible to monitor them from activists and medical bodies.

In the event that the study on the victims of the Covid-19 disease is validated, this means that the official figures only spoke of an estimate of “only 1.25 percent” of the number of actual deaths.

The study involved researchers from the Covid-19 response team at Imperial College, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the Syria team at the London School of Economics, the European Institute for Peace and the Institute of the Orient. Medium.

The Syrian government had officially confirmed the presence of 2,703 people infected by the coronavirus, stating that 109 people had died in all the areas it controlled, while there are no clear numbers of injuries and deaths in the areas that are subject to the opposition and the Syrian Democratic Forces.

On the other hand, an official at the morgue in Damascus said there are around 100 people dying every day in the capital alone due to the emerging corona virus.

While the dean of the Damascus University Faculty of Human Medicine, Naboug Al-Awa, confirmed in an interview with “CBS News” that 100 patients with the Covid 19 epidemic arrive at the capital’s hospitals every day, warning of the possibility of many new infections that have not been discovered as is being done. Counting cases that show severe symptoms and enter health centers for treatment.

He added that most Syrians have no shelter “other than state-run hospitals, but unfortunately all the rooms in them are full, so only patients with severe symptoms are received, and the intensive care unit admits the patient. after emptying a bed into it for the death of another. “

In light of the poor conditions at health facilities in Syria, Dr. Nihad Assaf, a surgeon at the prestigious French St. Louis Hospital in Damascus, said that the Corona virus had killed 63 doctors across the country in just one month.

Likewise, a Facebook page noted that the country lost 31 lawyers in a short period due to that epidemic, while official figures announced that the number of daily cases of contagion by the disease had tripled between the beginning of July and the end of last August. .

It should be noted, and according to the official news agency (SANA), on March 22, the first case of contagion in Syria was registered for a person from outside the country, while the first death was registered on March 29.

Regarding the increase in the number of deaths whose cause is unknown, the Syrian Minister of Health, Nizar Yazigi, explained that it could be due to the lack of reporting of medical cases attended at home and the delay in seeking advice.

In late July, Yazigi confirmed that the increase in the number of people infected with Coronavirus locally, which exceeds 500 people, and the spread of the disease both horizontally and vertically, may herald a wider outbreak in the event of non-compliance and neglect of individual and community preventive measures.
