Yesterday, the families of the prisoners held a sit-in in front of the Beirut Palace of Justice, amid strict security measures, demanding the issuance of a general amnesty law for their children, expressing their fear over the outbreak of the Corona pandemic. in prisons, as reported by the “National Information Agency”, noting that a delegation of the protesting families met with the Minister of Justice of the interim government, Marie-Claude Negm, and presented their demands.
In the same context, the Legal Observatory confirmed in a statement that “the opportunity is still available today, before it is too late, to save the lives of the prisoners from the outbreak of the epidemic (Corona).”
The Observatory called for legal and procedural measures to protect prisoners and said: “Today, with the outbreak of the epidemic exposed, and for social and humanitarian reasons, and in solidarity with the mandate signed by 511 inmates in the Roumieh prison, it is It is necessary to reaffirm the need to take several measures, the most important of which is: The judicial power’s commitment to the literal application of Article 108 of the Criminal Procedure Code at the expiration of the period of preventive detention, and not allowing the continuation of the diligence in the text of the text, in addition to the need to cite the date of detention in the pertinent notes, in order to facilitate the determination of requests for release ”. He pointed out the need to “replace the cases of preventive detention by judicial control, which is a legal mechanism. It is available to the Judiciary to use without the request of the interested party, according to the text of article 111 of the Code of New Procedures.”
The coordinator of the Legal Observatory, Attorney Gad Tohme, stated in a statement, “It is imperative to unify the efforts of workers in the justice sector and those interested in human rights issues, to ensure a just humane solution for the prisoners.
Those who mainly suffer from the dilemma of overcrowding in prisons, and do not lack an additional psychological tragedy that threatens their right to physical integrity and their right to life, transmitted by the news of the possibility of a pandemic spreading among them , urging the judicial body to “take urgent measures and immediate decisions, to prevent the worst from happening, without waiting for government decisions or the approval of legislation in the House of Representatives.”
