Jordan’s Minister of State for Media Affairs Amjad Al-Adaileh said: “An explosion occurred in the early hours of Friday morning at a warehouse containing unusable mortar bombs belonging to the armed forces, located to the east from the city of Zarqa “.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the explosion was caused by an electrical short circuit in warehouses that are located in an isolated and uninhabited area, and are subject to direct surveillance by cameras,” Al-Adayleh was quoted as saying by the Jordanian news agency.
He added: “According to the General Command of the Jordanian Army, until now, no injuries have been reported as a result of the explosion.”
An official military source from the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces said there were no injuries in the explosion that occurred at a munitions depot under dismantling in Zarqa.
The huge flames lit up the desert night and could be seen from a distance to the capital Amman, which lies 35 km to the southwest.
Nabila Issa, a housewife and mother of five living in the city of Zarqa, said: “We felt like an earthquake had occurred. The windows shook, the windows shook and my children started screaming,” according to Reuters.
According to the agency, security forces closed the vast industrial zone, inhabited by 1.5 million people, and prevented cars from entering or leaving it.
