Why are the penalties “attractive” this time?

The issue is whether we publicly adopt or show any support for the recent US sanctions against former ministers Yusef Fenianos and Ali Hassan Khalil. This is, at least, “patriotically” disgraceful. It can touch the accusation of employment or hostility to “the resistance”, which in the ideology of the Lebanese state is part of the ruling triangle of the “golden equation”.

To avoid falling into the category of prejudice to US imperialism, conspiracy and incitement to “resistance”, we often suppress our opinion on such sanctions, as long as this opinion is whistleblower or cheering … it is not presented or delayed. So, somewhere, we can slightly resent the penalties for the public harm they bring, as happened with the Lebanese banks, or we don’t care at all as long as the punished “is proud” of his punishment, and holds it up as an ornament on his chest .

What is not important here, for many Lebanese, is US policy towards Hezbollah. The latter voluntarily and faithfully chose to fight the Great Satan. This last part exchanges enmity with him. While these many Lebanese do not find enemies who hate the United States, even if they do not like American policies very much. Furthermore, at the same time, they are unwilling to provoke Hizbullah or declare their complete hostility towards it, as this can provoke infighting that they have been fighting to avoid for more than 15 years.

And the relative consolation in the matter is that we do not have to respond when the United States punishes a Hezbollah member accused of drug trafficking in Latin America, or a businessman close to the party accused of laundering money in an African bank. The party itself frees us from this problem when it denies any connection to drugs or money laundering. As for the people affected by the sanctions, they are not representatives of the Lebanese people, nor of the State and its agencies. And only they have the consequences of the decision and return the charges.

More than that, we can even be convinced that the shameful accusations that come in the terms of the sanctions are political malice, making us less than enthusiastic about the American decision and ignoring it, leaving the party with the task of confronting it.

And when the sanctions were extended to the deputies of the chosen party from a large Lebanese audience. In other words, the Lebanese Parliament, which is the Parliament and its representative, shook Hezbollah and its Secretary General of any fear or anxiety. They repeatedly stated that it did not affect them. Rather, they demanded that the United States neutralize Lebanon and the Lebanese and avoid their repercussions, and that they were receiving the sanctions with great pride, courage and indifference.

But later, it appeared that Hezbollah’s vast coffers were not enough to protect the country and its people. The disadvantages of these sanctions are illustrated by their political and economic effectiveness. For this reason, international and Arab policy towards Lebanon turned into estrangement, isolation, siege … and even collective punishment. It is a policy that greatly accelerated the financial collapse and the precipitous decline and fall of the state.

However, the anger against Hezbollah was not terrifying enough, and neither was the United States. There was a kind of surrender and reverence for the “clash of the titans.” In any event, we are not qualified, either at present or in the near future, to deter the United States or tame Hezbollah.

However, yesterday there was a major change in the Lebanese mood regarding the sanctions decision announced by the US Treasury Department against Yusef Fenianos and Ali Hassan Khalil. Certainly, the Lebanese were not interested in these allegations of the type of alliance with Hezbollah, of helping, empowering or providing services to Hezbollah … no matter how much they paid attention to those few lines that the United States Department of the Treasury transmitted from cleverly and briefly in his decision, indicating “corruption” in its various aspects. Bribery, brotherhood and suspicious financial deals, to benefits through hiring, hiring and exploitation of influence.

These lines came to say what the Lebanese have been discussing daily for many years about the corruption of statesmen, ministers, leaders, party leaders, general managers and all those who work in politics or public administration.

Despite these accusations issued by the “Great Satan”, they were not very reprehensible or reprehensible, but immediately credible because they were very similar to the point of coinciding with what the Lebanese know, smell, see, hear and touch on a daily basis. Therefore, the impact of the decision and its reasons were very different from previous similar decisions.

In a country where it is difficult to list crimes, including murder, murder, robbery, embezzlement, corrupt deals, usurpation or violation of people’s rights, destruction of the state and the environment , negligence and mismanagement, sectarian and sectarian incitement, or the cause of strife, intimidation and terrorism, daily lying to citizens or neglect of interests OR looting the wealth of the country or causing the impoverishment of millions, the misery, the bankruptcy of the state treasury, the bombing of half the capital, etc., which are not listed or accounted for by those heinous crimes that are deeply involved in them, and in a period of at least two decades … Yet there is no accountability, accountability, or punishment once. Therefore, those damn lines mentioned by the United States Department of the Treasury, accompanied by the sanction decision, have irresistible appeal to a large Lebanese audience.

This change in the “rationale” of the US sanctions, for the first time, brought them Lebanese popularity. It gives her the support of a public opinion that has despaired of useless demonstrations, to the point that it may even be convinced of an alliance with “Satan” to get rid of this miserable system.
