Control of “loose weapons” in the south: no confrontation with “factions”

Baghdad | Armed with its ministerial statement and the political coverage of various parties and forces, the Iraqi government launched a security operation in the capital, Baghdad, and the city of Basra (south) to control so-called “fugitive weapons”, to track down the killers. activists and journalists and go after drug traffickers and other wanted persons. Regiments from the Antiterrorist Service, the army, the Marine Infantry Brigade and the Border Guard, as well as units from the Ministry of the Interior, participate in the operation. Interior Minister Othman Al-Ghanimi affirmed the government’s determination to “impose the prestige of the state and enforce the law”, describing the ongoing process as a “national duty”. Al-Ghanmi said in a statement that “preventive operations carried out by the security services to arrest wanted persons and confiscate unauthorized weapons will have positive results on the Iraqi street.”

The operation was preceded by a statement issued by the “Security Media Cell”, warning of the dangerous use of medium and light weapons in tribal conflicts in the Husseiniya area, east of Baghdad, which resulted in the loss of innocent lives. , warning that “the State and its security services will not sit idly by in the face of this clear challenge.” The rule of law, and one of its basic duties, is to protect its citizens and maintain their security … “, concluding by saying that” in order to enforce the law and improve security, our security forces have begun to record the area, withdraw types of weapons from citizens and confiscate them in accordance with the law and impose security and stability in it … “

Al-Kazemi sources confirm that “the Al-Buaitha incident is unlikely to be repeated.”

And while what happened in Husayniyah was considered the direct motive for the launch of the operation, it became clear, in recent days, the government’s intention to launch a similar campaign to control the security chaos in the south, which warns about the occurrence of armed civil confrontations, especially in light of two dangerous indicators:
1- Call on the angry young people from the pillars of the political class to arm themselves, with the upcoming first anniversary of the “October movement”, and the continuation of the series of unknown attacks against journalists and activists. In exchange for these appeals, Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi sought to secure political cover for a security operation that disabled the bombing, which was translated by the statement issued by the leader of the “Al-Fateh Alliance” (the meeting of the blocs that support the “Popular Mobilization”) Hadi al-Amiri, calling for the “imposition” of state prestige and uncontrolled arms control ».
2- The fact that any armed confrontation in Iraq, regardless of its causes and size, will generate a “snowball” difficult to stop, in the face of a social culture that tends to prevail over violence, and a political-economic crisis that could push to blow up the situation. In this regard, some circles close to Al-Kazemi began to suggest early that “the prime minister will launch campaigns against the arms of the clans, dissident factions and the leaders of corruption …” This cannot be isolated from the aspiration of man to fill his balance with “achievements” that can pave the way to a second term.
Although the information indicates that the operation will continue until its objectives are achieved, it seems that the recent government efforts have aroused the “enthusiasm” of most opponents of the factions loyal to Tehran, with the aim of placing them in a basket with the objective of security measures. However, Al-Kazemi sources confirm that he is not in the process of “repeating the Al-Buitha incident”, although he does not mind attacking so-called “factions tweeting outside the squad”, armed with what he says is his support in decision-making circles in Tehran, especially before the holding of early parliamentary elections (mid-2021).

A new goal of the American coalition
The Security Media Cell announced, in a statement the day before yesterday, that an explosive device had exploded against an Iraqi transport company contracted with the forces of the “international coalition” led by Washington, on the highway that connects the areas of Al-Bayaa and Al -Shula, northwest of the capital, Baghdad. The statement added that the explosion caused injuries to a police officer from the accompanying force and a citizen who was there. This explosion is the third of its kind in less than a week, and one of a series of messages that the Iraqi resistance factions appear to be sending to the US occupation, with the aim of accelerating their withdrawal from the country, especially as it is Current tactic, which will not be limited to certain areas, will confuse the forces. American and its contractors. Yesterday, it was reported that three “Katyusha” missiles landed at Baghdad International Airport.
