The head of the “Lebanese Forces” party, Samir Geagea, said on Sunday that Hezbollah must hand over the decision of war and peace to the state.
Hezbollah’s weapon sparks a dispute among the Lebanese, as one side supports it under the pretext of “confronting Israel”, while another group sees it as an illegal weapon and demands that the decision of war and peace be restricted only in the hands of the state, including Geagea.
“The time has come to return to Lebanon, in the broad sense of the word,” Geagea said in remarks released by the official news agency.
He added that “Hezbollah cannot continue without organizing its relations with the state like any other political party, (…) Hezbollah must hand over the decision of war and peace to the state.”
And he continued, “Hezbollah must stop its brazen foreign interference (…), and stop playing the spearhead of the Iranian project (…)”.
There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah on Geagea’s remarks, but he generally denies them.
And “Hezbollah” is an ally of both Iran and the Syrian regime, and has influence within Lebanon, fighting alongside Bashar al-Assad regime forces in the ongoing war since 2011, drawing criticism from one sector. of the Lebanese, and Washington considers him an “enemy”.
In another context, Geagea called for a “transparent international investigation” to learn the details of the port explosion, a call that was repeatedly rejected by the country’s official circles.
On August 4, the Lebanese capital spent a bloody night, as a result of a large explosion in the port of Beirut, which left more than 191 dead, more than 6 thousand injured and dozens missing, as well as massive material damage, with losses estimated at $ 15 billion, according to an official estimate. Not definitive.
The port explosion adds to the pain of a country that has been suffering for months, the repercussions of an economic crisis that is the worst in its modern history, and strong political polarization, in a scenario where regional and international parties overlap .
The explosion prompted the Hassan Diab government to resign, after it replaced the Saad Hariri government on February 11, 2019, which was forced by popular protests that raised economic and political demands to resign, on October 29, 2019.
And last Monday, Lebanese President Michel Aoun assigned Mustafa Adib, the ambassador in Berlin, to form a government after the latter obtained a 90-vote majority from 120 MPs.
