Lebanon’s hospitals are threatened by a crisis as large numbers of doctors prepare to emigrate

The head of the Union of Doctors, Professor Sharaf Abu Sharaf, revealed that hundreds of doctors had come from the Union to request their files and statements in preparation to leave the country, warning of a real disaster should the bleeding continue in the sector doctor.

Abu Sharaf pointed out the eagerness of European and American countries, as well as neighboring Arab countries, to hire Lebanese doctors and nurses, and all workers in the hospital sector, due to their scientific levels and great experience, in addition to the rush to work, pointing in a statement to “Asharq Al-Awsat” noted that the intertwined financial, economic and banking crises affected workers in this sector and their families, and companies that used to contribute to the travel of doctors to participate in medical congresses abroad they refused to do so in the last period due to the crisis. All of this led the doctors to seek for job opportunities outside of Lebanon to guarantee a better standard of living and, most importantly, security and stability for their families.

Abu Sharaf explained that a large number of doctors who work in Beirut university hospitals are among those who initiated the immigration procedures, highlighting that the Union is committed to addressing this phenomenon and improving working conditions, but the situation is very difficult given the absence of minimum rights and protection.
