Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami said that the lifting of the arms embargo imposed on Iran, expected in October, will allow Iran “to export more defense products,” according to Radio Farda.

Hatami said that with the lifting of the arms embargo imposed by United Nations Resolution 2231, which prevents Iran from exporting arms, his country will be able to export “products (defined as weapons) and technical services.”

In an interview published by the government newspaper Iran, Hatami claimed that Iran currently produces “more than 90 percent of the weapons required by the armed forces.”

In the interview, Hatami noted that the remaining 10 percent of the need for weapons does not affect the country’s defense capabilities.

The United States reimposed sanctions on Tehran in 2018, after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal, which was concluded between Iran and a group of superpowers.

Britain, France and Germany were partners with the United States in the nuclear deal that was concluded with Iran.

Last August, the United States sought to activate a proposal in the Security Council to extend the embargo imposed on Iran, warning of the great threat posed by the “malicious activities” of the Iranian regime.

The attempt to reimpose sanctions on Iran was unsuccessful, prompting the United States to resort to the “snapback” mechanism included in the nuclear deal.

The purpose of the “pushback” mechanism (Snapback) is to force the UN Security Council to re-impose international sanctions on Iran.

Speaking to the Security Council on August 20, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said sanctions will be imposed on Iran in 31 days from that day.

The announcement came after the minister said that the US president’s administration has shown that Iran’s nuclear program is not peaceful.

He added that it is dangerous not to extend the arms embargo to Iran.
