For the eleventh week in a row, thousands of Israelis demonstrated Saturday night to demand the departure of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accused of corruption, and two policemen were injured during clashes with protesters.
Despite the spread of the new Corona virus, thousands of Israelis gathered in occupied Jerusalem, demanding the departure of the Prime Minister and carrying banners accusing him of corruption and deception.
On the sidelines of a meeting in front of Netanyahu’s official residence, clashes broke out between the police and a crowd of protesters, with police saying that two of their members were injured.
Hundreds of people gathered in “Kayseri” in front of Netanyahu’s private home. The website of the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported that about 300 bridges and intersections witnessed demonstrations against the behavior of the government and its president.
The newspaper said police arrested one of the protesters during a demonstration in front of Netanyahu’s residence, noting that one of the banners raised by the protesters read “a liar and a dictator.”
Protester and environmental activist Yaara Peretz said that the accusations against Netanyahu in 3 corruption cases are only “the visible part of the problem”, and said that the protest movement reflects the deep anger of the Israelis.
Netanyahu is accused of corruption, embezzlement and breach of trust in a number of cases, making him the only prime minister in Israel’s history to be indicted during his tenure.
Deep change … a requirement for everyone
“The common denominator among the protesters is the demand for a profound change in the system, even if they belong to separate protest movements,” Peretz added. “They are against Bibi (Netanyahu) against the corruption of the regime.”
The Israeli government is also facing criticism as the pace of COVID-19 infections accelerates, following the lifting of a series of restrictions beginning in late April. Netanyahu admitted that the reopening of the economy was premature.
And Israel is one of the countries that recorded the highest number of injuries compared to the population.
The unemployment rate has exceeded 20% in recent months, compared to 3.4% in February. Due to the reduction of social assistance, a large part of Israelis face economic difficulties.
Netanyahu’s trial began on May 24 and is expected to last between two and three years, according to estimates published in Israeli newspapers.
