On Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a new threat to Greece due to escalating tensions in the eastern Mediterranean, on the eve of the start of military maneuvers by his forces in the region.
The dispute between Turkey and Greece, both NATO members, has grown increasingly over the eastern Mediterranean’s oil and gas wealth since Turkey deployed an exploration ship last month to the region.
Today Saturday, the Turkish newspaper “Cumhuriyet” revealed that the Turkish tanks had moved towards the Greek border. The newspaper indicated that this move came after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced today his country’s readiness for all forms of sharing the wealth of the eastern Mediterranean, provided this is fair.
It is noteworthy that Erdogan said earlier: “The attempt to seize all the wealth of the Mediterranean, which is the right of all countries that ignore it, is an example of modern colonialism.”
The newspaper pointed out that the Turkish president had indicated that his country has the political, economic and military power to tear apart the unjust maps and documents that are imposed on it, ”he said.
Erdogan added that “the attempt to confine Turkey within its shores through the (Greek) island of Meiss, which is only 10 square kilometers, is the most prominent expression of injustice and inequity,” according to him, adding that ” Attempts to push a country that does not benefit itself (referring to Greece) to confront a regional and international power like Turkey has become a bit of fun.
Turkey announced on Sunday the launch of military exercises in the eastern Mediterranean, dubbed “Mediterranean Storm”, in cooperation with “Northern Cyprus”, in the context of escalating regional tensions.
On the other hand, Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiades warned on Saturday that the escalation of tension in the Mediterranean “threatens to destabilize the entire region”, which was rejected by Ankara and accused Athens of evading the talks.
Turkey also announced today its support for the initiative for military talks in the eastern Mediterranean, and considered the publication of statements by France from Iraq, in addition to its presence in the eastern Mediterranean, which does not contribute to peace and dialogue.
The European Union previously hinted at imposing sanctions on Turkey due to tension with Greece in the eastern Mediterranean, sanctions that can be discussed at the next summit scheduled for September 24.
