Macron addressed an ultimatum to Lebanon

Under the previous title, Rawel Mustafin wrote, in “Nezavisimaya Gazeta”, about Paris taking it upon itself to diminish Hezbollah’s influence and Macron’s bet on this bet.

The article says: French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Beirut for the second time in less than a month. The main purpose of his visit is to assess the readiness of the Lebanese authorities to undertake fundamental political and economic reforms. Based on that, a decision will be made on the question of the international community providing financial assistance to Beirut and the extent of this assistance. In addition, Macron will oversee the formation of a new government led by the former Lebanese ambassador to Germany, Mustafa Adib.

It is clear that the French will again help the Lebanese. This time, in the formation of government to avoid the well-known battle of sharing ministerial portfolios, which can last a few months. It is no coincidence that French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian warned Lebanese politicians not to delay the formation of the government. Otherwise, he said, Lebanon “could quickly disappear.”

Macron, however, faces another task that is no less difficult. Not all Lebanese expect honest “brotherly help” from the French, even among their utterly corrupt elites who are unfit for anything.

In reality, Macron is twisting the arms of Lebanon, which is extremely weak, and seeking not only reforms, which are the time to come, but also changes that suit the West. It is primarily about curbing the influence of Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran. The question of providing aid to Lebanon is presented as follows: either you Lebanese are undertaking reforms that satisfy our Western interests or you get nothing from us. In principle, it is an ultimatum. Macron understands this well. It is not by chance that he told the journalists who accompanied him on his trip to Beirut: “I am taking this bet and putting all my political capital at stake.” But at the same time, he says that this will be the last chance for the political system in Lebanon.
