Commenting on the assignment of Ambassador Mustafa Adeeb to form the next government in Lebanon, a spokesman for the US State Department stated: “Any government must demonstrate its willingness to work in the interest of the Lebanese people by fighting corruption and implementing reforms that can meet the Lebanese people’s demands for economic opportunity, accountability and transparency.“.
“The Lebanese people, since last October, took to the streets to demand economic and institutional reform, better governance and an end to the rampant corruption that has stifled the enormous potential of Lebanon,” the spokesman added in an interview with Al- Hurrah.“.
He noted that “the devastating explosion on August 4 led to doubling the calls of the Lebanese people and the international community for government reform, transparency and economic stability. These calls have not been fulfilled.”“.
The US State Department spokesman concluded by saying: “As we and the international support group have pointed out, any government that comes in must satisfy the legitimate aspirations and needs expressed by the Lebanese people through the urgent implementation of serious reforms.”“.
He added: “Only by charting a new direction dedicated to reform and the fight against corruption will the next government be able to help Lebanon emerge from the current crisis.”
