The Jordanian artist, Imad Hajjaj, was released yesterday after five days in detention, after publishing a cartoon about normalization between the Emirates and “Israel”, and was accused at the time of “disturbing relations with a sister country”. He would have been imprisoned for more than 14 days, after the case referred to the Information Crimes Law, and he was accused of “slander and calumny”, after which he was transferred to the State Security Prosecutor’s Office. Thus, he was released without bail after the Deputy Attorney General for State Security approved the decision to prevent his trial and return the case to the Amman Prosecutor to investigate the case, after amending the accusation that has become exclusively related to information crimes. The release decision came after pressure from international and local organizations and societies concerned about freedoms that condemned Jordan for Hajjaj’s arrest. In an interview with Al-Jazeera Net, Hajjaj expressed his happiness at regaining his freedom and emphasized the work of the cartoon by “criticizing and motivating people to evaluate situations”, describing his arrest, which he first experienced as a “harsh experience ”, noting that he had not committed any crime. He added that anyone who follows his drawings knows that they are included in the political cartoon, and that “it is an obvious right for any artist or creator to express his opinion.”
