President Michel Aoun noted that “a year ago we announced the beginning of the centenary of Greater Lebanon, and it was decided that cultural and artistic activities would begin to inform about Lebanon, Lebanon of civilization, Lebanon of culture, Lebanon of values, Lebanon of diversity and coexistence, and also Lebanon of struggle and suffering Lebanon, pain and hope, unfortunately, last year was full of unprecedented crises and disasters, leaving no room for any hint of joy, however, there is hope, the hope of a change real that allows our country to rise again.
President Aoun pointed out to him in a message on the occasion of the first centenary of the declaration of the state of Greater Lebanon, that one hundred years have passed since the establishment of the Lebanese state, and it is true that the approaches of the Lebanese to this historical fact are different and at times contradictory, but it remains a testament to history and to the fact that the declaration of the state of Greater Lebanon formed the nucleus for the settlement on its present borders, after he gave it back to it, and assured it of precious recognition international at that time. He added: “With the launch of Greater Lebanon, the bases of the state began to be concentrated. All the administrative, financial, judicial and security institutions and organizations were established in that period, as well as the Lebanese constitution.”
And he considered that the first centenary, although it knew some periods of prosperity and economic, cultural and institutional rebirth, but it was full of chaos, crises and wars, in which we did not know the real stability except for brief periods similar to a truce between crises and crisis … Where is the defect? Is it in us, in our system, in our environment or in our destiny? Our society is pluralistic and diverse, and our ancestors saw a formula for coexistence based on respect for others and their right to political existence, and it was successful until it was suffocated by the political upheavals in the region that ignited our wars and the wars of others in our land. Even the Taif Agreement, which became a new constitution, had its strengths and weaknesses that appear in each period.
President Aoun pointed out that today Lebanon is in an unprecedented crisis, as decades of accumulation in politics, economics, money and life have exploded. Time to discuss a new formula or a new deal? The youth of Lebanon are calling for a change. Their voices echo everywhere calling for a change in the system, so should we listen to them? These young people are the Lebanon to come, and for them and for their future I say: Yes, the time has come. He explained that pluralism is a source of human, cultural and value richness, which is what made Lebanon a message and a land of encounter and dialogue. Will we allow it to become an impulse of division and division? He pointed out that the sectarian system based on the rights of the sects and the quotas between them was valid for some time, but today it has become an obstacle to any development and any reactivation of the country, an obstacle to any reform and fight against corruption , and a generator of strife, incitement and division for anyone who wants to hit the country.
He added: “Yes, it is necessary to develop the Lebanese system, amend it, change it … Call it what you want, but surely Lebanon needs a new concept in the management of its affairs that is based on citizenship and the civilization of the state.” , and indicated that Lebanon has been transformed from a sectarian system. Prevailing the modern civil state, the state of the citizen and citizenship, means its salvation from the hateful legacies of sectarianism and its regression, and its salvation from the reserves, red lines and quotas that unite any constructive will and stop any step towards reform. ”. He indicated that the Lebanese deserve after suffering, a state in which efficiency is the norm. And the law is the guarantor of the rights of all equally, and the basic affiliation is with the country and not with the leaders of the sects; This state is a popular demand, and the voices in the squares demand it, so will the political wills meet in it and seriously discuss the mechanism to achieve it?
He continued: “Oh Lebanese, so that September 1, 2020 is a continuation of September 1, 1920, and because I believe that only a civil state can protect, preserve and make pluralism a true unity, I ask that the Lebanon be declared a civil status, I ask that Lebanon be declared a civil status, I promise to convene a dialogue that includes spiritual authorities and political leaders to reach a formula acceptable to all, translated into appropriate constitutional amendments, this is our land, this is ours homeland, and no matter how difficult the difficulties, we will stay here and continue together, and Lebanon will continue to be from a centenary to a centenary, the eternal homeland of rice.
