Egyptian authorities have detained another suspect in the case of the gang rape of a young woman in a major hotel in Cairo, the Egyptian Prosecutor’s Office announced on Sunday.
In the case, which dates back to 2014, a group of wealthy and influential people are suspected of drugging and raping a young woman at the Fairmont Nile City Hotel in the Egyptian capital.
The prosecution said in a statement that it “ordered the detention of the accused, Muhammad Hafez, for four days pending investigations” after his arrest on Friday.
On Saturday, the Lebanese Internal Security Forces announced the arrest of three Egyptians accused in the same case in the town of Fatqa, three days after the Egyptian Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that seven of the accused in the case had fled the country and that international prosecution measures had been taken against them.
On Thursday, Egyptian authorities announced the arrest of a man suspected of being involved in the same case that sparked a wave of anger in Egypt.
This crime was kept secret until last July accounts began to be spoken on social networks, among these accounts, one on Instagram called himself “assault police.”
According to this account, which is watched by 170,000 people, six men drugged and raped a girl at the luxury hotel.
The names and photos of the alleged perpetrators, all from wealthy families, were circulated on communication sites, but France Press could not verify their authenticity.
In early August, the Egyptian prosecutor’s office announced the opening of an investigation into these rape allegations, after receiving “a letter from the National Council of Women attached to a complaint made by a girl to the council about some people who sexually assaulted her in 2014 within from the Fairmont Nile City Hotel in Cairo “.
For its part, the hotel announced that it had carried out an internal investigation, and confirmed that it had never been informed of this fact by any part of the hotel or the tourism police.
A study conducted by UN Women in 2013 found that the majority of Egyptian women had been subjected to sexual harassment.
