Beirut: Three Egyptians charged in the case of the gang rape of a young woman in a hotel in Cairo, Lebanon, were arrested, according to the Lebanese Internal Security Forces announced.

This case, which took place in 2014, was revealed last month in Egypt and sparked a wave of anger in the country.

The Internal Security Forces said in a statement that they had received a request from the Interpol office in Egypt to arrest “seven people of Egyptian nationality who are in Lebanon” for indicting them in this case, but it was found that only five of they “entered Lebanon on earlier dates, and then two of them left to liquidate the number.” Against three suspects within Lebanese territory. “

The three people were arrested “in the city of Fatqa on Saturday,” according to the statement.

On Thursday, Egyptian authorities announced the arrest of a man suspected of being involved in the same case in which he confronted a group of wealthy and influential young men for drugging and gang-raping a young woman at the Fairmont Nile City Hotel in Cairo. in 2014.

The Egyptian Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that it had taken “steps to arrest all the accused through Interpol, and investigations are being completed.”

On Wednesday, the Egyptian prosecutor announced that he had ordered the arrest of nine suspects in the context of the case.

This crime was kept secret until social media accounts started talking about it in July, and among these accounts there is one on Instagram calling himself “police assault.”

According to this account, which is watched by 170,000 people, six men drugged and raped a girl at the luxury hotel.

The names and photos of the alleged perpetrators, all from wealthy families, were circulated on communication sites, but France Press could not verify their authenticity.

In early August, the Egyptian prosecutor’s office announced the opening of an investigation into these rape allegations, after receiving “a letter from the National Council of Women attached to a complaint made by a girl to the council about some people who sexually assaulted her in 2014 at the Fairmont Nile City Hotel in Cairo. ”

For its part, the hotel announced that it had carried out an internal investigation and confirmed that it had never been informed of this accident by any part of the hotel or the tourism police.

A study conducted by UN Women in 2013 found that the majority of Egyptian women have been subjected to sexual, verbal or physical harassment.
