On Friday, the United Nations Security Council renewed the mandate of the United Nations force in Lebanon, “UNIFIL”, for one year and reduced their number, calling on Beirut to facilitate access to the tunnels that cross the Blue Line between Lebanon and Israel.

Diplomats indicated that the council unanimously adopted a draft resolution in this context prepared by France.

The resolution stipulated that “as” UNIFIL “has successfully fulfilled its mandate since 2006, which has enabled it to maintain peace and security, the Council decides to reduce the maximum number of troops from 15,000 to 13,000.”

This decision will not change much, as the UNIFIL peacekeeping force currently stands at 10,500, according to a source who requested anonymity.

On the other hand, the text calls on the “government of Lebanon to facilitate rapid and full access by UNIFIL to the sites that the force wants to investigate, including all locations north of the Blue Line, which separates Lebanon from Israel, and related with the discovery of tunnels that allow the incursion into Israeli territory “. .

And the United States pushed, since the beginning of summer, to reduce the number of “UNIFIL” and allow access to the tunnels that are attributed to Hezbollah.

The resolution urges the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, to “develop a detailed plan, with specific dates and mechanisms”, in coordination with Lebanon and the troop-contributing countries, to improve the performance of “UNIFIL”.
