The European Union welcomes Washington's decision on the International Criminal Court

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, described the lifting of sanctions and visa restrictions by the United States on ICC staff as an “important step”.

“The ICC has an important role to play in achieving justice for the victims of the world’s worst crimes. Strengthening the continuity and independence of the ICC is crucial to its effective and efficient functioning,” Borrell said in a written statement.

“The European Union, together with its partners, will continue to support the International Criminal Court and resist attempts to interfere in the work of the international justice system,” the statement added.

Earlier, it was reported that US President Joe Biden canceled the executive order on “freezing the property of some individuals associated with the International Criminal Court.”

Notably, relations between the Trump administration and the International Criminal Court have witnessed tensions due to the court’s determination to investigate possible war crimes in Afghanistan and the Palestinian territories.

In mid-June 2020, the former president of the United States, Donald Trump, signed a decree that allows sanctions to be imposed on any ICC official who handles the aforementioned investigations.
