NASA classified the 2015 MB54 as an Apollo space rock, a name given to a group of near-Earth asteroids that have an orbit larger than Earth’s axis.

And NASA reports that the asteroid will pass 3,230,000 miles from Earth. For comparison, the average distance between the Earth and the Moon is about 239,000 miles.

NASA tracks thousands of asteroids annually, all of them safely beyond the planet. There are more than 18,000 asteroids near Earth.
