The US “Associated Press” reported on Sunday that “the Iranian Revolutionary Guard discussed the possibility of launching an attack on a military base in Washington, as well as threats to target a prominent military officer.”

The Associated Press quoted two US intelligence officials (it did not name them) as saying that communications intercepted by the National Security Agency in January revealed that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard had discussed an attack on the “Fort McNair” base in the same month.

The two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media, added that “the possible attack would have been similar to the incident against the USS Cole, which was struck in October 2000 by a suicide bomber in Board a boat that has stopped. In addition to the warship in the Yemeni port of Aden, which caused the death of 17 sailors.

They also revealed “Iranian threats to kill the deputy chief of the US Army General Joseph Martin and plans to infiltrate and monitor al-Qaeda,” according to the Associated Press.

Fort McNair is one of the oldest bases in the United States and is the official residence of Martin.

These threats were one of the reasons that led the Army to strengthen protection around Fort McNair.

The “Associated Press” reported that the Defense Ministry (the Pentagon), the National Security Council and the National Security Agency declined to comment on this issue.
