A French diplomatic source announced that Europeans and Americans should increase pressure on the Lebanese political class to form a new government, indicating that this can also be done through sanctions.
The source told reporters: “The pressure must be greatly increased on the political leaders (in Lebanon) … This will be the job of the next few weeks.”
He added: “We will not move alone, but with our European and American partners.”
He noted that “this action (pressure) will happen in a much easier way under the administration of US President Joe Biden, while former President Donald Trump used to view Lebanon as a mere agent to change the power equation with Iran.”
He noted that “in this environment, the issue of sanctions that will be imposed on Lebanese officials who obstruct any political progress will be brought to the table.”
The source pointed out that the issue of sanctions was not a priority in August and September, but after six or seven months it became legitimate.
