Beirut: On Sunday, the Lebanese Defense Ministry froze its weapons licenses, starting Monday and for an indefinite period, amid fears that escalating protests in the country will turn into violence.

This came about in a decision issued by the Minister of Defense in the interim government, Zeina Aker.
The decision stipulated “to freeze the validity of the licenses to carry weapons in force throughout the Lebanese territory, as of Monday, March 8, until further notice.”
The decision did not mention the reason, but excluded diplomatic missions, politicians, heads of religious sects and their companions.

This comes at a time when protests have intensified in Lebanon since Tuesday, after the Lebanese currency registered a historic collapse against the dollar, as the exchange rate of a dollar surpassed 10,000 pounds in the parallel market, while its official price is 1510 pounds.

On Sunday, Lebanese newspapers warned of “real dangers” that may occur in the coming days due to the continuing deterioration of the situation on various levels.
The “Al-Nahar” newspaper reported that “Lebanon appears to be heading this time into a maze of dangers without roofs”, while the Al-Anbaa newspaper quoted sources as saying that “the country is on the brink of a veritable explosion.” “
Meanwhile, the Al-Diyar newspaper wrote that “Lebanon is constantly moving towards hell.”

For the sixth day in a row, Lebanon is witnessing sporadic protests in Beirut, Sidon, Tripoli and Baalbek by hundreds of Lebanese. In rejection of the deterioration of economic and living conditions and the collapse of the national currency.

The protesters also cut off the main roads and streets in and around the capital, and separated areas in the north and south of the country, according to Anadolu Agency.
In the midst of severe polarization, Lebanon is going through a political and economic crisis, the worst since the end of the civil war (1975-1990).
