A top security source confirmed that “ISIS” was planning to carry out suicide terrorist operations in Lebanon, indicating that the Lebanese Army Intelligence Directorate arrested several of the organization’s affiliates and that they were at the stage of preparation and planning to target military centers and sites belonging to the army and security forces, and this is what he was admitted to in the investigation branch of the directorate in light of his exploration of most of these sites.
The source told Asharq Al-Awsat that the number of detainees amounted to 18, 12 Syrians and 6 Lebanese, and that one of them was a Lebanese who had a prior record and had been arrested on charges of planning to carry out terrorist operations.
The security source pointed out that the detainees constitute a terrorist group similar to the terrorist group that was behind the operation that targeted several young people in the city of Kaftoun in Koura (in northern Lebanon last August) and the forces of Security were able to arrest those who were left alive in the joint operation carried out by members of the Intelligence Directorate and the Information Division of the Internal Security Forces.
The source said that the detention of the elements affiliated with “ISIS” was carried out in a preventive operation carried out by the Intelligence Directorate and remained confined in the camps for displaced Syrians located on the outskirts of the town of Arsal in the border with Syria in eastern Lebanon and in the Al-Qaa project area (northeast Lebanon) on the basis of the information available to it. He said that the Intelligence Directorate has come to the firm conviction that “ISIS” plans to re-carry out terrorist operations in Lebanon targeting military sites and centers that could exploit the presence of the displaced in various camps, especially those located in outside the village of Arsal. He emphasized that the Intelligence Directorate monitored the movements of a group of Syrians and Lebanese, including those with prior backgrounds, until it caught them with the red flag and arrested some of them who had confessed to being ISIS.
He added that the detainees’ confessions led to the arrest of others belonging to ISIS who were communicating with each other and holding meetings to determine the targets they planned to target with suicide operations.
The security source confirmed that the members of the terrorist group communicate directly with each other, in preparation for the meetings they hold, and do not use cell phones to communicate with each other in order to eliminate their suspicions and prevent their phones from being monitored by security services.
