The British mission to the United Nations confirmed that the UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling for a ceasefire in conflict zones to carry out safe vaccination campaigns against the coronavirus.
The resolution, tabled by Britain, which currently chairs the Security Council, stated that the council calls for “an immediate cessation of hostilities in all regions” and that all parties guarantee a stable and long-term humanitarian truce to assist the safely transport and distribute COVID-19 vaccines in conflict areas.
The Security Council also calls for the conditions for the arrival of medical personnel and equipment to be established in all areas to carry out the vaccination campaign, and calls on the parties involved in conflicts to guarantee the safety of medical personnel.
The Security Council indicated that the humanitarian truce does not include military operations against terrorist organizations such as “ISIS”, “Al-Qaeda” and “Al-Nusra Front” and organizations linked to “Al-Qaeda” or “ISIS” and other organizations in the UN terrorist lists.
In July 2020, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2532, in support of the call of the United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, to halt all combat operations during the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic.
